Deep groove ball bearings are miniature, roller-bearing devices that use small balls to provide radial and axial load support. These bearings are grouped into two main categories: standard and expanded, each with several sub-categories. The standard type is further subdivided into an expanded one-ring and a thin outer ring. Deep groove ball bearings are one of the most common types of ball bearings. They are commonly used in car and electric motors, as well as in office machines, automation controls, and gardening tools. Their close raceway dimensions and deep grooves make them suitable for high-speed applications. They are easy to replace and come in a huge variety of sizes and materials. In many cases, they can be used in high-temperature settings.

One method of determining a deep-groove ball bearing's lubrication regime is to test it under a specified radial load. To perform this test, the ring blank is fixed on the main shaft and the test bearing is attached to one end. The other end of the shaft has a motor driven pulley. A dead-weight lever system applies static load to the test bearing. In other words, the load is a pure radial load.

While conventional ball bearings are not ideal for axial loads, deep-groove ball bearings are designed to handle this type of load. Typical deep-groove ball bearings can handle 50% of the radial load. Smaller bearings are capable of handling up to 25% of the load. This versatility is why deep-groove ball bearings are so widely used. Its low friction properties make them suitable for high-speed operations and high-load conditions. Unlike conventional ball bearings, deep-groove ball bearings require less maintenance.
